Have you heard of Harry Hems? He was an Exeter based, world renowned ecclesiastical sculptor and employed over 100 craftsmen, with offices in Oxford, London and Ireland as well as Exeter. This remarkable character in Exeter’s history had a specially designed and built workshop just around the corner from St Sidwell’s church at what is now Harry’s Restaurant on Longbrook Street.
We have a very exciting and unique event planned called Hidden Hems. The event takes place at Harry’s Restaurant, Exeter (Harry Hems original workshop) on June 16th, 2-5pm. As well as enjoying High Tea and a glass of fizz you are invited to a behind the scenes look at Harry’s office (still with original features). RAMM curator Tom Cadbury will bring a rarely seen Hems collection of medieval woodwork & talk about his work.
Here’a very short introduction to Harry Hems featuring Tom Cadbury:
This Hidden Hems event was introduced as part of our recent Crowdfunder appeal and there are still tickets available at £25 each. We have two statues by Hems at St Sidwell’s Community Centre and whilst some of the money to restore them was raised through our recent Crowdfunder we are waiting to hear whether we qualify for funding from the William Morris fund. All money from this event will go towards restoring the statues or towards rebuilding a Victorian-inspired cast iron gateway over the entrance to the community centre. UPDATE: tickets are now £20 to celebrate the fact we got some funding for the statues from the William Morris fund on May 31st!
