At The Sidwell Street Café, we pride ourselves on serving good quality, locally-sourced, nutritious and delicious food that’s also extremely good value for money. It is run by qualified staff and supported by many dedicated volunteers. When available, we use produce grown in our garden or surplus food donated from local supermarkets. We make all our cakes from scratch and we bake real bread to serve in the café and to sell.
The Sidwell Street Café is more than just a café; it is a community. Every visitor to our café provides crucial support towards our inclusive work experience and training programmes.
For many volunteers and work-placements, working in our cafe helps to boost confidence, as well as providing useful work experience and training. Volunteers are involved in every aspect of the cafe: preparing and cooking food, serving customers, operating the till, practicing their barista skills, and much more. If, on occasion, the service may be quirky or not be instant, we trust that the warmth and the fact that we are providing training as well as good food will more than compensate.
What’s on the menu?
Our cafe is open to all and serves breakfasts and lunches as well as offering hot and cold drinks and a range of home-made cakes. Our menu includes soups, jacket potatoes, sandwiches (toasted or not!), as well as a different freshly prepared daily special every day of the week. There are always veggie and vegan options available. Prices range from £2 for breakfast items to £4 for our daily specials. Homemade cake is £1.20 a slice and barista coffees start at £1.50.
Though we can’t open our Cafe until the lockdown restrictions end, some of our staff and volunteers are still cooking every week. We’re making a range of nutritious cooked meals which we’re freezing and which are available for collection from the centre on Mondays and Thursdays or, if you are isolating, for home delivery. Our homemade meals provide a generous portion for one person and come in eco-friendly boxes which can be thawed and then reheated in the microwave or oven. Currently, we can offer:
- Lasagne/Vegetarian Lasagne £3.50/£3 per portion
- Chickpea Curry (V) £3 per portion
- Lentil dhal £2 per portion
- Cottage pie £3 per portion
- Spicy Sausage Casserole £3.50 per portion
All these meals are available free of charge to any individual or family experiencing food poverty. Just contact us.
